Our Week - August 17

Hello families!

Your first graders are working hard and practice their skills. We are getting a good start on the year.

NOTES

  • Practice words for the week with your child. The more practice, the better the words are learned.
  • Read books with your child every night. First graders learn reading more quickly when they hear adults read to them regularly.
  • Please use the restroom before coming to school. This will reduce interruptions to instruction.
  • All t-shirt orders must be completed by this Friday. (Send $5 and the size, please.)

READING
We are continuing to review sight words from last year. This week the words we are reading: play, you, he, is, she, and, said, are, do, this.

Continue to review the color words: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, brown, black, purple, pink, gray.




LANGUAGE
We are reviewing these sounds at the beginning and ending of words: d, r, b, l, k (ck)
We are reviewing the sound of short i (igloo).
We are continuing to work on rhyming words.

We will practice writing these words by thinking about their sounds:
it, kit, lit, bit, dig, pig, big, rig, did, rid, kid, lid

We will also practice writing the sight words we worked on last week: 
I, can, we, like, see, the, go, to, have, a


MATH
We will write and count to numbers 1-35.
We will work on recognizing numbers out of sequence.
We will think about numbers that come between others in sequence. (22 23 ____ _____ 26)
We will talk about these math concepts: before, between, after, more, fewer, greater, less


SOCIAL STUDIES
We are continuing to learn about living in our school community and the local community. We will read books and talk about ways people live together in towns and cities.


SCIENCE
We will begin a study on weather.

Our Week - August 10

Hello first grade parents!

Each week information about our week will be posted here. You can discover what skills and information we are working on. Also, a few notes for you will be at the start of each message.

NOTES

  • Check your first grader's agenda every day. Notes and information will come home in the agenda. Make sure to sign the agenda each evening and send back any needed information.
  • Has all the first-of-the-year paperwork been returned?
  • First grade t-shirts are only $5.00. Please send money (in an envelope) and size choice.
  • If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Wiley at any time.

READING
We are reviewing words that we learned last year. We are working on reading these words independently: I, can, we, like, see, the, go, to, have, a.
We are working on reading color words: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, brown, black, purple, pink, gray.


LANGUAGE 
We are reviewing these sounds at the beginning and ending of words: m, s, t, p, n, k, f, h.
We are reviewing the sound of short a (as in apple).
We are working on naming words that rhyme (mat, bat).

We will practice writing these words by thinking about their sounds:
at, cat, hat, pat, an, can, man, am, ham, Pam


MATH
We will practice reading number words: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
We will be writing numbers 1 to 25.
We will count up to 25. 
We will compare numbers between 1 and 25. (Which number is more? Which number is less?)


SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be learning how to work and learn together. We will learn rules, routines, and procedures that will help our classroom work well.
